Sir, - Rosemary Nelson was a truly heroic person, like Martin Luther King. Like him she persevered in the struggle for basic human rights for her people despite abuse and opposition and repeated threats to her life. She was aware of the parallel and foretold her fate, speaking of herself as the "uppity nigger" who would be eliminated.
How can she best be commemorated? A memorial fund to help her young children so cruelly deprived of their mother would be one way of doing it. And should we not name the proposed millennium structure in O'Connell Street after her? This would give meaning and purpose to "the needle" and Dublin would again have a Nelson monument, but this time one that would be an inspiration to all lovers of peace and democracy. - Yours, etc., T.
