Madam, - A recent fatal traffic accident in which a traffic island is thought to have been partly to blame has highlighted the precarious positioning of traffic islands placed at parking lay-bys on the N6 dual carriageway between Kinnegad and Kilbeggan.

These islands are positioned barely to the left of the inside lane. There is a high risk of collision with them, particularly at night. They have reflectors but no electric lighting. However, these reflectors are completely inadequate and quite a few have already been damaged (possibly by previous collisions). Whilst there are warning P signs as one approaches these lay-bys, an inattentive driver may not notice them.

However, even if one does, I do not believe that it gives even the remotest guarantee that some drivers might not still collide with the traffic islands, leading possibly to a very serious accident. May I also add that there is not even a rubbish bin at these lay-bys, which has led to a lot of them becoming quite unsightly.

- Yours, etc,
