Madam, - Now that the census has revealed that 8.4 per cent of households in Ireland consist of unmarried "cohabiting" couples, can the Government please get round to giving them some rights, particularly in the areas of tax and inheritance?
The Irish Times recently ran an excellent article highlighting the lack of recognition such relationships are given in law and the consequences if one partner gets sick, loses their job, gives up work to look after a child, or dies.
The release of the census is a good opportunity for the Government to update legislation in this area to reflect the reality of modern Ireland. - Yours, etc.,
LIAM KENNEDY,
