Madam, – Dermot C. Clarke (March 7th) puts the question: “Would you buy a second-hand referendum from this Government?”

This is an interesting viewpoint and neatly put, but the implication is wrong. The Irish people should not support the Lisbon Treaty because the Government recommends it; equally, we should not reject it because the Government is in favour. We should vote Yes to Lisbon on its merits and because it is in our interest to do so.

Has Ireland been that “lost son” wasting wealth on “riotous living” in recent years? It’s time to come to our senses, scramble out of the pigsty and decide what is really important.

We can start by voting Yes to Lisbon at the first available opportunity and then continue to dig deep into the intelligence, resilience and humour that are the wonderful resources with which this still great nation has been blessed.
