Sir, - Crime is a persistent social problem, which we seem unable to control. Prison, in particular, does not work. It is corrupting, expensive and fails to develop a sense of responsibility in offenders.

However, there is a way forward. It is known as restorative justice and is based on three central tenets: accountability, re-integration and reparation. It requires the victim, offender and community to come together to work out a solution. Victims are given a voice and offenders are given a chance to make amends and take responsibility for their actions. In countries where this approach has been adopted, it has met with success.

In collaboration with our colleagues in EXTERN (Belfast), the Irish Penal Reform Trust is establishing a Restorative Justice Ireland Network. We intend to compile a directory of restorative projects, provide information, and organise conferences and training events.
