Sir, - Cllr Peter Doyle (October 11th), is curious to know what the British and Irish governments propose to do about the IRA and its arsenal. He speaks as a British Irishman and expresses his concerns as one.
As an Irishman, I cannot be alone on this island in being curious at to what the British government proposes to do about the British terrorists of the UDA, the UVF, the Red Hand Defenders, the LVF, etc. - the British terrorists operating in the British part of the island of Ireland.
Would the British government, in this "new" international situation as Cllr Doyle puts it, have any defence if Irish armed forces were deployed to address a task which it itself either cannot or will not? Will we ever see the British government deploying its armed forces to counter the threat from British terrorists in its own territory, the terrorists its own intelligence services have armed and colluded with in the past?
Maybe Cllr Doyle has resided in Wootton Bassett for far too long. Maybe if he lived in the grim streets of north Belfast he wouldn't have such a smug attitude. - Is mise, Andrew Ryan, Kimmage, Dublin 12 .
