Sir, - Americans are often decried in Ireland and elsewhere as being loud and meddlesome, less refined than Europeans. But one thing about this recent tragedy has struck me. The treatment of Arab-Americans has been incredible. While some attacks have occurred, the vast majority of people have expressed true sympathy. Arabic community centres report that for every one negative message they receive, 10 ten more are given in support and welcome. We are examining our relationship and treatment of the Arab world as never before, and the recent renewed calls for a Palestinian state reflect this changing attitude.
Legitimate grievances are getting more attention, hopefully leading to a change in foreign policy that will be much more effective than the death of Osama bin Laden in quashing extremism. This is in marked contrast to the Gulf War mentality, yet it is occurring at a time when you might expect much worse. To me, this attitude represents a patriotism much deeper than any spirited flag-waving. Ireland often mentions its image as a land of welcomes, but it could learn a lesson or two from its often mocked neighbour across the ocean. - Is mise,
