Madam, - In relation to the resignation of Eddie Shaw from the Road Safety Authority, The fact that someone in public life has taken responsibility for the non-implementation of policies is a very rare sign of hope. As Mr Shaw has pointed out, government departments are extremely resistant to change.
I suppose it would be too optimistic to assume that Mr Shaw's example might be followed by others in similar positions. I am thinking in particular of the mountain of reports residing in the Department of Health, whose non-implementation has led to suffering, loss of life, and huge financial costs.
While there is much wringing of hands, nobody is willing to take responsibility for this, and there is no evidence that the sorry state of affairs will not continue into the future. - Yours, etc,
Dr TERESA GRAHAM, MRSA and Families, Meadowbrook, Tramore, Co. Waterford.
