Madam, – Further to correspondence (August 18th) regarding my article on travelling in Burma (Myanmar), (Go, August 14th). I travelled to Burma in November 2009 after Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy party had reportedly dropped their opposition to tourism to Burma, saying that visitors might help draw attention to the oppression of the people.
I have written an accompanying column (due to appear in Go on September 4th), examining the state of the country under the military junta from a tourist’s perspective. This column examines the fact that the authenticity of Aung San Suu Kyi’s statement has since been called into question by Tourism Concern; muddying the water yet again. – Yours, etc,
