Sir, - Concerning the Minister for Education, Ms Bhreathneach's proposal to remove history from the list of compulsory subjects for the Junior Cert, I have a word or two to say. Having completed my Junior Cert in 1994, I have reaped the benefits of the course and developed a love for history both Irish and European as many of my peers have. I would be disillusioned to see the education system return to the "Murder Machine" that Padraic Pearse referred to.
Am I to suppose that the next step in depriving the future politicians and leaders of their culture and history is to remove Irish from the list of compulsory subjects?
