Madam, - It was indeed a poignant coincidence that Irish boxers were guaranteeing themselves Olympic medals at the same time as the passing of your erstwhile boxing correspondent, Seán Kilfeather. How he would have loved to have reported from Beijing on their great achievements, as he did on the triumphs of Michael Carruth and Wayne McCullough in Barcelona in 1992.

Those of us who knew Seán, either personally or through his work, know that he left no one indifferent about him or his views. David Shanks's fine tribute in your edition of August 20th captures the essence of the man. As my godfather, he was one of the most caring, passionate and formidable people I have ever have had the privilege to know.

When I was a self-important teenager, I loved to engage in dinner-table debate on a range of subjects with Seán, where I learned at first hand that he could be a fierce and determined opponent.

However raucous and heated these discussions could become, I really appreciated that he always treated me as an equal when not all did, by challenging my thinking and often making me rethink my preconceived ideas. Seán has left me with a respect for other people's point of view that is fundamental to all debate.

Although I am sure he would contest the description in typically spirited style, Seán was a great Christian in his generosity to all and in his consideration for those less fortunate than he was.
