Sir, – Thanks to your journalists Brian Boyd and Ann Marie Hourihane, as well as others, who did a fine job covering the heartbreaking life and death of Amy Winehouse (July 25th). I fear it’s something more than “rock ’n’ roll is different for girls”, however. It’s something to do with the creative passion of these outstanding talents that we don’t understand, and until we “walk a mile in their shoes” we may never understand.
Possibly the most succinct bit of advice which talented young people can receive in an attempt to avoid addiction is, quite simply, “When something’s more powerful than you, it’s best to stand back and leave it alone.” – Yours, etc,
