Madam, - Frank Farrell (May 10th) goes on at some length about Minister for the Environment Dick Roche and The Irish Times misusing the word "remediate".
He purports to quote the Oxford English Dictionary in support of his argument that the the combination of the prefix "re-" and the verb "mediate" does not mean to "repair" or to "provide a remedy for".
If he had just studied his dictionary a little more diligently before leaping into print, he might have learned that the verb "to remediate" is derived from the word "remedy" and that both your esteemed organ and the Minister were quite correct in using the word as they did. - Is mise,
