Sir, - Kevin Myers stirred up a hornet's nest in his criticism of the Defence Force escort for the Relics of St. Therese. Rev. Brian Kennaway (April 26th) claims there would be an outcry form nationalists if relics of William of Orange were to be carried by the RUC and British Army. Is the escorting of numberless Orange parades from now until next winter - all honouring the same William - not the same thing? Anyway, Michael O'Keeffe (April 27th) ably answered the Rev Kennaway.
Then we had Mark Finan (April 29th) suggesting that `the day-to-day individual living of the Gospel is surely more relevant than a medieval spectacle", and missing out on the whole point of bringing the relics here - to remind us of Therese's life and teaching in The Little Way of complete abandonment to God and complete trust in Him. Isn't that more necessary than ever nowadays for "personal spiritual growth"?
Finally, isn't it interesting that it only seems to be Ireland that has a problem with publicly honouring the relics of St Therse? Is it only in Ireland that pluralism does not mean encompassing the different strands of society but of excluding them for fear of giving offence? - Yours, etc.,
Mrs Mary Stewart, Ardeskin, Donegal Town.
