Sir, - It is sad and alarming that there is an organised effort to bar refugees from entering Ireland. The hostility of some groups is surprising and, in fact, awful.
One wonders what would have happened between 1848 and 1900 if the United States had adopted the same hostile attitude to the Irish fleeing starvation and persecution and seeking a new life, There would have been no John F. Kennedy if that policy had been the norm.
What would have occurred if the people of Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow had decided in the latter part of the 19th century that they wanted no Irish in their cities?
The hostility to refugees seems to be coming from a well-heeled and selfish. class in our society. The racialist doctrine of these groups must be repulsed. - Yours, etc.,
BRIAN QUINN,
Kincora Grove,
