Sir, I read with interest the proposals put forward to change the names of the RTCs to Institutes of Technology. The idea gets my support, but I have grave reservations concerning the abbreviated titles which may/will be accorded these colleges. For instance, the Dublin Institute of Technology is known as DIT. The following colleges would have comical abbreviations:
Waterford RTO, Waterford Institute of Technology, WIT.
Sligo RTC, Sligo Institute of Technology, SIT.
Galway RTC, Galway Institute of Technology, GIT.

Tralee RTC, Tralee Institute of Technology, TIT.
Rather than being a graduate from WIT or TIT, perhaps a more correct name for these colleges would be Institutes of Commerce and Technology. - Yours, etc.,
