Madam, - The report by Mary Fitzgerald (August 20th) on service indicators in local authorities states that Carlow had the lowest rate of household waste recycling at 6.5 per cent.
I wish to point out, as stated in the report from which the figure was extracted, that this relates only to waste collected at the kerbside and does not include materials recycled through local authority bring banks and civic amenity sites.
Some 33 per cent of households in Carlow do not avail of a kerbside recycling service, which is provided by the private sector only, and instead extensively use the bring facilities provided by the county council.
When this is taken into account, the true rate of household waste recycling in Carlow is in fact 16 per cent. - Yours, etc,
ÉAMONN WALSH, Director of Services, Carlow County Council, Carlow.
