Sir, – Well done to all the hearty souls who completed the Dublin City marathon in whatever time and whatever mode of ambulation they used. Every participant had their reason, their person, their charity they were doing it for. And the crowds of supporters were enthusiastic, doing their bit for all involved.
It is a pity that the National Lottery withdrew its sponsorship of the event earlier this year (Home News, October 27th). Look at what the UK lottery has done for sport (not just elite) and to promote people being active in Britain and Northern Ireland? We will most likely never host an Olympiad, but to have a world-renowned “friendly” marathon on an annual basis is a legacy we can achieve and be proud of.
What is the National Lottery waiting for? – Yours, etc,
