Sir, - People such as D.J. Dillon, who bemoaned (December 23rd) that single taxpayers gained more from the recent Budget than single-income married couples, must have been greatly heartened by the Christmas Day sermons by the archbishops of Dublin, Dr Desmond Connell and Dr Walton Empey, who both criticised Government taxation policy.
Their lordships' comments on Budget 2001 expose our Governments pathetic pretensions of fairness for what they are.
Their observations that "our taxation policy favours the market, not the home", and "in Christian terms our Budget did not reflect our glory as a nation" are adequate testimony of their understanding of the situation.
All we need now are "some representatives of the huge numbers of people, still animated by Christian concern for the less fortunate, to become mobilised in time for the next general election" in answer to the Christmas Day call by Dean Robert McCarthy of St Patrick's Cathedral. - Yours, etc.,
Anne Cahill, Laurel Park, Clondalkin, Dublin 22.
