Racing with the hound

Madam, – There has been recent speculation about   a possible cut in funding to the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund

Madam, – There has been recent speculation about   a possible cut in funding to the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund. This would have devastating consequences for racing at greyhound stadiums throughout Ireland.

A drop of 9 per cent in the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund in 2009 has already resulted in a €2 million rationalisation programme by the Irish Greyhound Board.

Up to 11,000 full-time and part-time jobs and more than €500 million  of economic activity is generated through greyhound racing in Ireland. Greyhound racing now supports more jobs than any single multinational company based in Ireland.

In addition, up to €7million was raised by greyhound stadiums last year, offering critical  funding for local charity and sporting organisations throughout  Ireland.

In addition, the Irish Greyhound Board is one of the most progressive semi-State organisations. In 2008 alone more than 13,000 French holidaymakers came to our greyhound stadiums in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland. Already plans for 2009 include visitors from Spain, Italy, South Africa and Scandinavia. This progressive industry is critical to maintaining economic activity in rural communities throughout Ireland.

I am calling on the Minister for Sport and Tourism to ensure greyhound racing is fully supported and encouraged for the future. He cannot run with the hare and race with the hound. – Yours etc,

TEDDY FOLEY,

Tralee, Co Kerry.
