Sir, - In her article "Engineering holds out many opportunities" (January 20th), Christina Murphy correctly points out that engineering students in Trinity College only need to specialise at the beginning of their third year. However, it is important to realise that Trinity College is the only "options" university which allows students to specialise in the engineering subject of their choice.
We do not operate a quota system. Thus students are able to enter any of our departments, namely, civil, structural and environmental engineering; computer engineering; electronic and electrical engineering or mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
It is also important for prospective students to realise that Trinity College has major new laboratory and teaching facilities for all branches of engineering. These will be on display at our Engineering Open Day on February 3rd. - Yours, etc.,
