Sir, - Barry Kenny of Iarnrod Eireann (June 14th), encourages customer to purchase weekly and monthly tickets in the days prior to the first day of each period if possible, to ease pressure on ticket offices at peak times, and avoid the queues which can result.
Why can't tickets run from the date of purchase rather than the fist day of the period? Why don't we have adequate ticket machines to reduce queues? These are on standard on other commuter services throughout Europe!
Mr Kenny's statement just confirms what I have known as a regular DART user since the service began in 1984. Namely the system is run by the staff for their benefit and not for the public. While the lack of rail investment is a fault of present and previous governments, the last train at 11.20, the lack of punctuality and "staff shortage" cancellations, demonstrate a system run below its potential. - Yours, etc.,
Pat Swords, Glenageary, Co Dublin.
