Madam, – Garret Fitzgerald’s article (Opinion, June 20th) referring to the reversal in prudent public spending practices gives me a sense of déjà vu.

Did something like this not happen in the late 1970s?

For people who think our economic woes are all due to the property bubble and the credit crunch his piece is essential reading.

Dr Fitzgerald states he pointed out competitiveness issues no less than 16 times previously; much of it due to public sector pay after benchmarking.
