Protecting Moore Street

Madam, – I am involved in the campaign to protect the National Monument on Moore Street, Dublin

Madam, – I am involved in the campaign to protect the National Monument on Moore Street, Dublin. In response to Frank McDonald (“Post-Cullen Abbey move on GPO should be scrapped”, Opinion March 11th), of course if the GPO was at risk of damage or destruction the campaigners would also seek to protect it, but it is not.

The point about the National Monument on Moore Street, consisting of three houses, is that the fabric of the houses is being threatened by construction plans, and they are at risk of serious damage. If the houses were considered worthy of National Monument status, because of their role in the retreat and surrender after the Easter Rising, surely they are now entitled to the protection of the State when private interests seem to threaten them?

The GPO will be available for commemorations in 2016, but the integrity of Moore Street and the lanes surrounding it will have gone forever. – Yours, etc,

HELEN LITTON,

Pembroke Gardens, Dublin 4.
