PROTECTING FARMED PIGS

LUCY LOUGHNEY,

LUCY LOUGHNEY,

Madam, - I was delighted to read in your edition of January 30th that, at last, somebody in the EU is concerned about the conditions under which the majority of pigs are kept. It is well known that pigs are as intelligent as dogs. If a person were discovered keeping dogs under the same conditions that intensively farmed pigs are kept, they would be prosecuted. The provision of a ball and some straw in order to improve the short life of a pig before it ends up on our dinner table does not seem excessive.

Some sections of the media seem to think that this directive is a big joke but I am sure that they have not seen the cruelty involved in intensive farming.

I hope that the directive will be passed into law shortly and that the law will be enforced. - Yours, etc.,
