Madam, – I am truly appalled by Martin Naughton’s reported proposal (Front page, December 3rd) that we cut out our overseas aid programmes. I for one will hold my head in everlasting shame if we even temporarily close our many overseas aid programmes helping the destitute. Opting out is the last thing our Government should do in the present self-inflicted crisis facing our wealthy nation.
At one stroke we would be reversing the nation’s proud record for humanitarian assistance in the places of greatest need. Our hard-won reputation built up since the foundation of the State would be lost. We would be turning our back on our fellow beings, thereby compounding the world’s problems. That the proposal comes from one of Ireland’s richest men is a further cause for dismay – unless he and some of our billionaires intend taking over our nation’s humanitarian responsibilities. But,even so, this help should surely be complementary and not in substitute. – Yours, etc,
