Sir, - My friend and colleague Denis Faul says that Roman Catholics and Anglicans should "remain good friends" (January 6th). The Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury, however, seem to want something more. At their meeting in December 1996 they committed themselves to work for "full visible unity".
They went on to describe this as "God's gift and our calling". This is the biblical language of "already/not yet". We do not yet have the unity God expects of us and still, in some mysterious way, we already possess that unity. - Yours, etc.
