Sir, - To be reminded of Mary Robinson's confident "possession" of the word "feminist" is indeed a comforting thought on the announcement of her imminent departure as Ireland's President. Nuala O'Faolain ("She was always there . . ." March 13th)) has (yet again) made things clear.
How many times have I heard people (mostly women) disown the word "feminist" as if it were a deadly contagion? Perhaps now, as Mary Robinson has reclaimed things that some felt were obsolete, out of fashion, parochial, unprogressive, she has made us possess these same things with confidence and pride. I can only hope that her influence will not be forgotten. - Yours, etc.
