Sir, - I find it remarkable that it takes the President of the US or the Tour de France cycle race to make funds available to fix the pot-holes of this country. The sudden realisation that an Irish town is going to be viewed by the world leads to wonders being worked to our roads. Is this to say that Irish people don't deserve properly surfaced roads on which to drive in their own right without some international reason? Surely the people who drive on our roads day in day out and who pay motor tax deserve to have the pot-holes fixed without having to wait for the next president to visit the country or the next international sports event which puts Ireland on the map. - Yours, etc., John Flavin,

Mooncoin, Co Kilkenny.
