Madam, – Mary B. O’Shea (March 21st) falls into the trap of many correspondents who rely solely on the English-speaking press for information on international events.
Ms O’Shea erroneously quotes Pope Benedict XVI as saying that condoms “increase the problem” of Aids. An elementary glance at the original Italian will show that what the Pope really says is that condoms “risk” making the problem worse — a significant caveat.
It is to be greatly applauded that there are still enough newsagents in Dublin who carry non-English-speaking newspapers and journals so as to make an objective assessment of international events possible.
