Pope's comments on Aids

Madam, – We’re only a few months into 2009, and already it’s proving to be a bumper year for knee-jerk, anti-Catholic bigotry.

First we had the ridiculous response to Pope Benedict’s New Year speech, when homosexuals amd their many acolytes in the media took the hump and indulged in mass hysteria at comments which the Pope never made.

Now the Pope is attacked for re-affirming the blindingly obvious: you won’t contract Aids if you adhere to the teachings of the Catholic Church on sexuality.

In keeping with the Catholic concept of free will, you’re perfectly entitled to ignore this teaching, but don’t say you haven’t been warned. One eminent scientist, in agreeing with the Church’s approach, has humorously described it as “Aids and how not to get it”.

If you do choose to ignore the Church’s advice, be it in San Francisco or Sub-Saharan Africa, and you contract the virus, there is a very good chance that, because of the Church’s enlightened teaching on charity, you will be cared for in a Catholic hospital. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Pope Benedict’s comments in Africa this week that condoms “increase the problem” of Aids is a major setback for global health education.

The World Health Organisation says that “consistent and correct” condom use reduces the risk of HIV infection by 90 per cent.

If we are to follow the Pope’s logic, why bother to put seatbelts in cars as they may encourages crashes? The only safe way is for everyone to walk. – Yours, etc,
