Madam, – Your Editorial (August 12th) offers the opinion that the Vatican’s decision not to accept the two episcopal resignations will “undermine the authority of the much- admired Dr Martin”, the Archbishop of Dublin. Quite the contrary. The Vatican is working diligently to preserve the institutional Roman Catholic Church whereas Dr Martin is, thankfully and very successfully, working even more diligently to preserve the legacy of Christ; objectives which have become mutually exclusive. Dr Martin’s integrity is, at this time, impregnable and his high regard in the affections of the Roman Catholic faithful guaranteed.
