A chara, - I could hardly believe what I read in your report headed "Anglers fear effect of proposed 500-pig unit" (The Irish Times, October 26th). The article states that "the Environmental Protection Agency proposes granting a licence to a controversial piggery in face of strenuous objections from Mayo County Council and outrage among anglers".

It is hardly necessary for me to point to the number of lakes and rivers which we have destroyed in recent times, many of them among the best in Europe both for recreation and for wildlife. The Central Fisheries Board, the North Western Regional Fisheries Board and the Western Fisheries Board have already expressed concern that the water quality of loughs Mask and Conn would be at risk if this particular licence is granted.

In view of past licensing permissions granted by the EPA, people are now beginning to wonder if this organisation is really concerned with protecting the environment or if it is simply a licensing authority. It is time to examine the whole operation of the Environmental Protection Agency. - Is mise,
