Sir, - Please can someone protect us from the sanctimonous whiners who are lashing out at "all the politicians"? We're the people, we elected them! Anybody who voted for Fianna Fail after 1987, after Des O'Malley et al were expelled, basically gave the nod to Haughey. If someone now claims they didn't know that Haughey was suspect, they shouldn't have been allowed vote on the grounds of mental incompetence.
Here was a man who owned his own island on a TDs' salary, for God's sake! What more evidence did they want? And it wasn't as if people such as Vincent Browne weren't drawing attention to this, either.
Forty-odd per cent of the country gave the nod to these people. The other sixty percent should educate themselves as to who is relatively honest. We have been given a clue as to who not to vote for. Which party has the most members under discussion at the two tribunals?
Let's not just get angry, let's get even. We hire these guys at election time. If we really care about it, we can fire them next time. Whether or not we're really that angry is another matter. - Yours, etc.,
Jason O'Mahony, Pembroke Square, Grand Canal Street, Dublin 4.
