Madam, - Conor Lally (June 30th) hits the nail on the head when he mentions the need for "high visibility policing".
It is time to come out of the bushes, from behind walls and unmarked cars. No more covert speed-clocking. Don those fluorescent jackets, turn on the blue flashing lights and witness the immediate effect of slowing down speeding traffic - without the need for expensive equipment and the administrative overheads.
Have we forgotten that the primary objective is to get motorists to drive sensibly and act responsibly on our roads - not to become totally obsessed with fines, penalties and insurance levies?
It is worthwhile mentioning that with all our new roads there seems to be little provision for gardaí to observe traffic from specially designated elevated lay-bys as can be seen in other countries. - Yours, etc.,
GREG ASHE, Old School, Kells, Co Kerry.
