Sir, – The Government must act urgently. The French have imposed a 75 per cent tax rate on earnings over a million euro, and Gerard Depardieu has announced his intention to relocate to Belgium (World News, December 17th).
I understand however that the paperwork is difficult, and potentially will take quite a few years. This is an extraordinary opportunity.
We must without delay offer economic asylum to those Frenchmen in the higher income bracket, allowing them to become Irish citizens.
We could set up a kind of IFSC for repentant ex-socialists, and offer the joys of a 52 per cent effective marginal rate while at the same time kindling a resurgence in Hiberno-French cultural relations.
