Madam, – Regarding proposals for Metro North, may I suggest that two further elements be considered to make this project a success.
First, a series of orbital bus routes at various points along the line. These could be implemented either as high-quality electric bus routes (such as proposed for Leeds) or bus rapid transit routes. This would greatly widen the catchment area of Metro North, connect most of North Dublin to either Metro North or a Dart line and provide orbital public transport routes, something which is virtually non-existent at present.
Second, a high-quality cycle network to widen the catchment area of Metro stations. Cycling has the potential to increase the catchment area for stations by up to four times compared to walking alone. Perhaps a joint plan could be drawn up by the authorities concerned to provide the necessary infrastructure such as cycle lanes, cycle parking etc.? Construction of the above would both greatly widen access to Metro North and, by boosting passenger numbers, reduce the subsidy the state will have to pay the operator. – Yours, etc,
