Sir, - The statistics concerning planning applications (July 11th) were interesting and did not surprise. One statistic that does not seem to be revealed is the amount of retrospective planning permission granted by county councils and An Bord Pleanβla.
The granting of retrospective planning permission is wide open to political influence at county council level. It is surely time for the Minister for the Environment to introduce very stiff penalties and administer them fearlessly for those who practice this devious method of obtaining planning permission.
I suggest a stiff fine and an immediate delay in any project of two years. This could help to pay for "planning police" who would monitor the implementation of planning regulations.
A league of county council planning retentions would be revealing and helpful to those trying to draft future planning regulations. - Yours, etc.,
Peter Seaver,
Kilkenny.
