Sir, – Apparently a report which “rejects blanket mortgage debt forgiveness” has been “welcomed” by the Irish Banking Federation (Front page Business, October 13th). It should at this stage be axiomatic that anything “welcomed” by the confederacy of dunces that is the IBF should immediately be rejected by those of us who are currently paying for their follies. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – The Keane report and its efforts would not be out of place as a plot line on Yes Minister.
I note the careful terms of reference of this 22-strong committee which consisted of no fewer than 17 civil servants, three central bankers and two retail bankers.
There were no pesky consumers, housing interests or lawyers to sow disharmony or offer alternative choices.
Their proposals, inter alia, a system where people get to “stay in their homes” on leases from charities and local authorities which effectively creates a class of modern day share-croppers whose “independent mortgage advice” will be funded by the mortgage providers.
One wonders if this is the best we can expect? – Yours, etc,
