Madam, – I find coverage of the upcoming Union of Students in Ireland protest tars all students with the same brush. Thus far, we have been represented by the USI and our students’ unions, who in their campaign, have been using provocative language to stir up support for the protest, while shutting out constructive debate on the issue with students.
Many students, among other things, oppose the march because they recognise that the provision of third-level fees is the lofty aim of a financially secure state, which Ireland is not. These students, growing in number, have been discussing the issue on a Facebook event, National Go To College Day, which offers alternatives to the march this Wednesday. USI and students’ unions are taking the approach that those who shout the loudest will get cut the least. It is unfortunate that not enough students have been informed, or have informed themselves, of what they plan to shout about. Fortunately, there is still time for them to change their minds. – Yours, etc,
