Sir, - As one who believed and encouraged the myth that Charlie
Haughey was unassailable and could do no wrong, I stand indicted, for Mr Haughey has been revealed as a man of clay.
It is with no joy that I now agree with what Garret FitzGerald said when Mr Haughey was proposed as Taoiseach in 1979 regarding a
"flawed pedigree" and what the late George Colley referred to at an earlier date as "low standards in high places". I now wish to go on record and state categorically: George Colley R.I.P., Des O'Malley,
David Andrews, Mary Harney, Bobby Molloy, you all stand vindicated.
After many years of blindness, where are you now, John Healy, when you are most wanted to shout STOP to the golden boy you so often told us was the saviour of everything positive?
As history is revised surely one man stands out for canonisation:
our former leader and Taoiseach, Jack Lynch. - Yours, etc., MICHAEL
J. STOKES PC,
Templeogue,
Dublin 6W.
