Sir, By a happy coincidence, Mary Holland's case for paying taxes (April 25th) arrived in my house on the same day as a 12 page booklet from Michael McDowell, calling for the repeal of residential property tax.
I agree with Mary Holland. People like Michael, Mary and myself should pay our taxes, in fact we should probably pay more. The Luxembourg Income Study shows that Ireland has one of the most unequal distributions of income, after taxes and benefits, of any country in Europe. RPT may not be perfect, but it does do a little to reduce inequality.
Your Property Supplement shows that there are plenty of people in the market for houses worth over £100,000. If they can buy these houses, they can surely afford RPT. But some people seem to want it all, even when so many others have so little. Yours, etc., Oakley Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.
