Sir,– Your articles (Home News, September 29th) detailing the huge payments paid last year to to former presidents, ministers, members of the judiciary and other senior office holders made for sickening reading.
What was so particularly appalling was the fact that so few of those high earners took the honourable option of forgoing any portion of their pensions. What a shocking example this gives to ordinary citizens, many of whom are in dire financial straits as they struggle to pay their mortgages and feed their families.
There is surely something rotten in the state of Ireland. – Yours, etc,
