Paying for third-level education

Madam, - Prof Tom Collins (April 16th) argues that "those who benefit from higher education should also be those who pay", but he neglects to suggest how this might be done. It is evident (from feeder-school lists) that a larger proportion of pupils from fee-paying schools go on to third-level education and it seems reasonable that those parents who choose to pay for their childrens' second-level education should also pay for third level.

I believe it is unreasonable to continue to expect those of us who support public education to subsidise those who can afford private education. It is time for the Minister for Education to grasp this particular nettle.- Yours, etc,
