Madam, – It is remarkable the way a number of prominent trade-union leaders have glided effortlessly from the boards of institutions such as the discredited Fás and the ineffectual Central Bank, where the concept of protecting taxpayers’ money was non-existent, back to the militancy of the picket lines.
Jack O’Connor recently accused the Government of devising tax policies that favour the wealthy over public service workers. With his own salary at a reported €124,895 (Front page, October 23rd), he surely belongs in the ranks of the former.
In the interests of credibility, should he and all similarly paid union leaders not be obliged, like politicians, to lead by example and take a substantial, voluntary pay-cut? Or is it just a question of do as I say, not as I do? – Yours, etc,
