Sir, - At a certain stage in the Vietnam War, the US Army's "search and destroy" missions were renamed "sweep and clear" missions - it sounded better. Today, capitalism has mysteriously vanished and we have something called the "free market". That, too, sounded good - who could possibly be opposed to a "free" market? But passing off auxiliary membership of NATO as a "Partnership for Peace" takes misnomers to new heights.
Neutrality is a simple notion - non-involvement with military pacts. Membership of PfP is a breach of neutrality. Those fond of misnomers can deny that, but whatever way they chop it, it's still baloney. - Yours, etc., Sean Swan,
