Madam, - Kathryn Holmquist (Education & Parenting, January 14th) suggests that all teenagers want to fire their mothers as managers.
When I checked this with my 13-year-old, her response was loud, instant, and couched in terms of small round objects! Her mother is a much valued friend, life coach and confidant, and she would not want to face life without her. Neither does every teen want a maid, an expense account and their own flat. Most I know have more valuable ambitions in life. Nor is my daughter unique, most of her friends feel the same way.
Rather than celebrate griping, it's about time we celebrated instead those teenagers who are friendly, communicative, and who just get on with handling what we impose on them before we given them their "you're an adult" life card. They exist, and I for one more than enjoy their company. -
