Sir, - In your report of the protest on the Ormeau Road last Saturday (The Irish Times, August 16th) Mr Gerard Rice of the Lower Ormeau Concerned Residents group appeared to be comparing his group's protest with that of the people who died in Tiananmen Square 10 years ago. May I, with the greatest respect to Mr Rice and his group, point out that the protesters in Tiananmen Square were not seeking to prevent their fellow citizens from marching through Tiananmen Square. Rather, they were seeking and dying for what Mr Rice and his group already have but seem depressingly determined not to enjoy, and that is democracy. - Yours, etc.,
Eddie Naughton, Weavers Street, The Coombe, Dublin 8.
