Sir, - Many people are extremely concerned about our Lord Mayor's position on the Orange Order. She is wrong to use the word "inclusion". The history of the Orange Order is closely associated with sectarianism. They are a group of people who have always excluded Catholics and have made a major contribution to division on this island.
There are many people from the Protestant tradition that would have nothing to do with the Order. It's important that the people of Dublin show that sectarian organisations have nothing to do with respecting other traditions. Triumphalism is not linked to equality. People on the Garvaghy Road and Ormeau Road have to live with this reality each day.
I now call on the Lord Mayor to dissociate herself from this group and put up a plaque to honour all the people that have given their lives fighting sectarianism and injustice. It's the least we can do. - Yours, etc.,
Cllr Finian McGrath, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9.
