One Ryder Cup victory, two flags

Madam, – What a hero Graeme McDowell is

Madam, – What a hero Graeme McDowell is. Not only did he overcome the best opposition US golf could throw at him, but upon his moment of victory he had to contend with being ambushed by two sets of fans, one set wanting him to hold aloft the flag of Northern Ireland, the other the flag of the Republic of Ireland.

As always McDowell was the supreme ambassador for the island of Ireland, happily posing with both. However, isn’t it about time that the respective governments of Belfast and Dublin agreed upon an official flag that could be used by all Irish sportsmen, regardless of which state they belong to? Perhaps the IRFU could advise? It might even be a first step towards ending the foolish divorce that split the Irish Football Association in 1921 and arguably cost Ireland a place at so many subsequent World Cups. – Yours, etc,
